SCRIPT: It is certainly best to develop a script prior to shooting a movie. However, we often go on trips or excursions without planning a movie only to find out that the footage we have taken is worthy of being presented as a story of that event.   In that case the script has to be developed around the footage.

THE SHOOT: General guidelines. Keep a steady hand, minimum zooming, arrange shots in order ( wide angle or establishing shot, medium range shot and close-up ), avoid lengthy scenes, , use the two thirds rule just as in photography, lead the action, use pan and tilt shots when appropriate,

EDITING: Keep it simple!! Unobtrusive titling, minimum of special effects/graphics, and just plain dissolves and cuts for transitions can produce an award winning documentary. A good example is "Night Creatures of the Coral Reefs", a Video Explorers® production that is available in the online catalog.
